Towards Better Democracy

Good words, well written, better the world. Good literature betters the world immeasurably.

Unwelcome lodgers

Those words which inflict themselves
Overnight into the language. Mosquito buzz
Do examples have to be given
So offensive as they are?

They appear overnight in the Media and
On television out of the mouths of illustrious
Celebrities and in Social Media inflicting the
Language with visual and aural pain, mercurial
No explanation given as to their meaning
All assuming that you are part of the cognoscenti.

Often they are mangulations of perfectly
Suitable words which have worked well
Since Anglo Saxon times. But, no, these
Temporary coinages are offered as
Sauve and are assumed to give the speaker a sense of
Being part of the in-crowd, itself one of
Those which made it across the finishing
Line to enter in permanence to the language,
So uptodate.

These unwelcome words so superfluous to the
Language leaden the head and dull the ears
Their source from the lips of teenagers
Seeking a means of identifying with each
Other and creating a tribal means of
Differentiation. Later adopted by adults
By which time the terms have already lost
Their contemporaneity. The young have
Already moved on the create grass for
Pastures new.

Fortunately only one or two make it each year
Into the permanence of the Oxford English Dictionary
The others now lie in unmarked graves.
